How to Recruit Affiliates

Your first fifty partners will not find you

The fastest affiliates to recruit are the ones already connected to your business: your own customers, creators already reviewing your category, and affiliates who have opted into being found. Cold outreach works, but slowly. Start with customers, search creators by what they earn, and approach a competitor's partners last.

Quick answer: where do affiliates actually come from?

The fastest partners are already connected to your business. Your customers convert in days: they bought, they know the pitch, a widget turns them into affiliates in one click. A public program listing also pays off in days, because the affiliates browsing it opted into being found. Creators in your category take about a week if you search by what they earn, not follower count.

A competitor's affiliates take two to four weeks: highest intent, slowest, most delicate. Cold outreach takes a month or more with the lowest reply rate of the five, which is why it is last on this page and first on everyone else's.

    Turn your customers into affiliates

    DaysLow effort

The people who already bought are the shortest path to a first sale. No convincing needed, they know the pitch, and they talk to people with the same problem. Ask at the moment the product just worked, not in a monthly newsletter, and make sharing one click.

In Referly: The referral widget gives every customer a personal link, coupon and QR code with one-click invites, tracked from sent to converted. Popups and banners put the same ask on your site with page rules and targeting.

Widget, popups and banners start on the Business plan.

  2. 2

    List the program publicly

    DaysLow effort

Affiliates browse for things to promote the way you browse for tools. A public listing puts your program where that browsing happens, and the applicants arrive pre-qualified. It works while you sleep, which none of the other eight do.

In Referly: A Referly marketplace listing carries your logo, category, reward terms and an FAQ, published or unpublished from one editor.

Needs its own Marketplace Licence. Plans include free trial days, not the licence itself.

  3. 3

Search creators by what they earn

    About a weekLow effort

Follower count is the wrong filter. What predicts a creator's value is whether they have ever converted an audience into buyers. Search on earned revenue and category, and take a smaller audience that buys over a larger one that watches.

In Referly: Influencer Discovery filters Referly's own affiliate base by category, platform, audience and revenue, shows a match score, and sends an invitation with a commission plan and an optional signing bonus paid automatically on acceptance.

A $199/month add-on, 500 invitations a month, included on Enterprise and Agency Scale. Programs recruit fine without it.

I spend all day testing out sign up flows and campaigns. I have tried most affiliate platforms out there, but very few are as easy and powerful as Referly. Quick setup and accurate tracking.

  4. 4

Use the surfaces you already own

    About a weekLow effort

A footer link, an onboarding email line, a banner in the account area. Each converts modestly and together they produce a steady trickle that costs nothing to maintain. Warm traffic also tells you fast whether your signup page works.

In Referly: Every affiliate group gets its own signup link, and the Affiliates table's Source column separates portal, widget, API, manual and imported signups. No UTM tags needed.

  5. 5

    Approach category creators directly

    2 to 4 weeksMedium effort

The YouTubers, newsletter writers and reviewers already covering what you sell. Easy to find, hard to convince, because they get asked constantly. What earns a reply is an offer that survives their calculator and proof you actually read their work.

In Referly: A signing bonus paid on acceptance is the single most effective way to get a first post from a busy creator. It turns a speculative commission into a certain payment.

  6. 6

    Approach a competitor's affiliates

    2 to 4 weeksMedium effort

Find who ranks for your category's review queries and check whether they run affiliate links. Most experienced affiliates promote several products, so ask to be added, not to replace anyone. Poaching on rate alone buys a partner who leaves for the next higher rate.

In Referly: The competitor affiliate research tool surfaces the partners a competing program already works with, so the list is a search result rather than a guess.

    Competitor affiliate research

  7. 7

    Participate in communities first

    2 to 6 weeksMedium effort

Reddit, Discord and Slack groups where your category is discussed. Slow on purpose: a recommendation from someone with visible history is worth more than an ad precisely because it cannot be bought quickly. Budget weeks of being useful before the first mention.

  8. 8

    Affiliate networks and directories

    A month or moreHigh effort

Networks bring reach and take a cut, or charge for placement, or both. They suit programs that already convert and want volume. Paying for placement before your funnel is proven means paying to advertise a broken checkout.

  9. 9

    Cold outreach at volume

    A month or moreHigh effort

Last on purpose. It is where most people start and it has the lowest reply rate of the nine, because it asks a stranger to spend their credibility on you. Three messages over ten days, with the number in the first one. Then stop.

In Referly: An email that says 'generous commissions' makes the reader do work to find out if it is worth replying. They will not. Put the rate in the message.

Fix this first

Nobody declines your email. They decline your offer.

Partners judge four things in about nine seconds. Move the levers and watch what you are actually offering.

The rate, against your category

Not against what feels generous. Against what else they could promote with the same post.

Recurring vs one-time

20% once and 20% on every renewal are the same number and completely different offers.

The attribution window

60 days is the default. Seven days reads as bad faith, and partners compare terms in public.

A signing bonus

Small, paid automatically on acceptance. The fastest way to a first post from a busy creator.

The four levers

Move any of them and watch what a partner is actually being offered.

How long does it pay?

Attribution window

60 days is Referly's default and a reasonable one. It is configurable on every plan.

What your partner is offered

Per sale
$9.80
Total, per customer
$9.80

A one-time commission is the offer most programs launch with, and the one experienced partners discount hardest, they know the customer keeps paying you and stops paying them.

Illustrative arithmetic on the numbers you set. Not a benchmark, and not a projection of what a partner will sell.

What to actually send

Three emails, ten days, then stop

Copy them, swap the placeholders, send. The fourth email converts nobody.

Day 0

Your {category} roundup, and a partner offer

Hi Maya, your teardown of the four tools you tried last month was the most useful thing I read that week, particularly the part about export formats.

We run an affiliate program for {product}. It pays 25% recurring for the first twelve payments, around $147 per customer at our usual plan, with a 60-day attribution window.

If it's interesting, here's the signup link. If not, no follow-up beyond one nudge.

Names something they published, puts the number in the message, asks once.

Day 4

Re: Your {category} roundup

Bumping this once in case it got buried.

Happy to set up a signing bonus on acceptance if that makes a first post easier to justify.

Two lines. The bonus is the only new information.

Day 10

Re: Your {category} roundup

I'll leave it here so I'm not cluttering your inbox.

The link stays open if it's ever useful, and I'll keep reading regardless.

Closing properly keeps the door open for next quarter. A fourth email closes it.

The week after signup

Most recruits never send a single click

Activation is decided in week one, not at recruitment. Four things move it.

Assets, before they ask

Marketing assets live in folders with per-group visibility. Send them in the welcome email, not on request.

A code as well as a link

Per-affiliate coupons are minted in Stripe, Shopify or WooCommerce the moment a partner is approved.

A ladder they can see

Milestones move partners to a better plan automatically. A visible next tier gets hit far more often.

A checklist in the portal

New partners get walked from first share to first referral, the exact funnel activity reports measure.

Automatic coupon generation and milestones start on the Business plan. Marketing assets and the portal checklist are on every plan.

Super simple to use, and includes everything that an affiliate program needs to end up a success.

What not to do

Four things that waste a month

1. Recruiting before tracking works

One uncredited sale ends the relationship. Test the whole path in test mode, click to approved commission, before any invitation goes out.

2. Paying directories aimed at the wrong side

Many 'top affiliate program' directories serve people who want to become affiliates of anything. Check who a site's content is written for before paying for placement.

3. Recruiting volume over fit

A hundred partners at an 8% active rate is eight partners and ninety-two support threads. Signups are the easiest number to grow and the least connected to revenue.

4. Offering a rate you cannot sustain

A launch rate you later cut costs more than the difference: the partners who joined for it leave. Want a big number? Cap it by payments instead.

  • Fewer than most people assume, because affiliate revenue concentrates hard, in most programs a small group of partners produces the majority of sales. Ten partners who match your audience will out-earn two hundred who signed up because a directory listed you. Judge the program on active partners, not total ones.

  • Two places that do not need an audience. List the program publicly so affiliates browsing for something to promote can find it, on Referly that is a marketplace listing, which needs its own Marketplace Licence; plans include a different number of free trial days. And search creators by what they already earn rather than by follower count, which is what Influencer Discovery does. Discovery is a $199/month add-on with 500 invitations a month, included on Enterprise and Agency Scale.

  • Review them at the start, when you are still learning who converts, then loosen once you know. Referly lets you auto-approve per program, and you can add custom application questions on any plan so the answers do the filtering for you.

  • Fraud prevention runs on every plan, including the entry plan. Referly matches the buyer's email and IP against the affiliate's and can either hold the reward for review or reject it automatically, and clicks carry proxy and VPN flags. A held reward shows the reason on the row, so you can see why it stopped.

  • Start from your gross margin rather than from what a competitor advertises, then make the structure do the work: a rate that recurs, or one that stays high for a fixed number of payments before stepping down, recruits better than a slightly higher one-time number. There is no published industry average we would stand behind, so we do not quote one.

  • It is normal, and most experienced affiliates promote several products in a category. The version that works is asking them to add you, not to drop someone. The version that does not is bidding on rate alone, a partner won on rate leaves for the next higher one.

  • That is the usual failure, and it happens in the week after signup rather than at recruitment. Send assets before they are asked for, set a first payout threshold low enough to be reachable, and give a coupon code alongside the link, in ecommerce a large share of affiliate sales arrive through a code typed at checkout. Automatic per-affiliate coupon generation and affiliate milestones both start on Business.

  • No. A program recruits fine without one, customers, a public listing and direct outreach cost nothing but time. Influencer Discovery is a paid add-on that makes creator search faster; it is not a prerequisite.
