Affiliate Program Examples

Copy the structure, not the percentage

Twelve real affiliate programs, with the commission rate, basis, cookie window and payout terms each one publishes, plus the single thing each gets right. Rates run from a flat fee per sale to 30% recurring. The useful part is rarely the percentage, it is how the program is structured around it.

Quick answer: what do most programs pay?

Shapes, not a single number. Software pays a percentage, usually recurring and very often capped at twelve months. Platforms pay a flat amount per referral, because order values vary too much for a percentage to mean anything. Courses pay a percentage with a cash cap, which gives partners a number they can say out loud.

Attribution windows in this sample cluster at 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 and 180 days, with the longer ones on products that take longer to buy.

The brief asked for twelve programs. Nine could be sourced from their own pages, so nine ship. Rows are cut, never estimated.

Copy this: The step-down is the whole design. A high rate for the first year recruits hard, and the tapered rate afterwards is contingent on the partner staying active, Bronze status requires at least ten referrals a year, so the long tail is earned rather than granted.

You'd change: Neither the attribution window nor the payout terms are published on the program page, which are the first two things an experienced affiliate looks for. A partner has to apply before they can evaluate the offer.

Payouts

Monthly on the 22nd, $10 minimum, bank or PayPal

Copy this: The two-stage attribution window is the smartest thing in this table. Thirty days covers the click, and once a referral starts a free trial the tracking extends to 400 days, which matches how long a store actually takes to become a paying customer, rather than how long a cookie is conventionally set.

You'd change: A flat fee that varies by the referral's country without publishing the country table means a partner cannot forecast anything. Publishing the bands would cost nothing and remove the guesswork.

Copy this: Paying $10 for a trial activation as well as the full sale is the underrated move. It gives a partner something to earn in week one rather than week six, which is exactly when a new affiliate decides whether the program is worth another post.

You'd change: The payout timing works out to roughly seven weeks between a sale and the money arriving. It is stated clearly, which is more than most manage, but it is long enough to matter to a partner deciding where to spend their next campaign.

Copy this: The hybrid structure pays a partner twice for one referral: a bounty when the workspace activates, then a share of what that workspace actually spends in year one, including seats added later. It rewards sending the right customer rather than simply sending traffic.

You'd change: The clawback window covers downgrades and refunds within two months, but the payout terms are not published at all, so a partner cannot tell whether the clawback lands before or after they are paid.

Copy this: This is the cleanest example of the cap-instead-of-a-lower-rate pattern in the table. Thirty percent for a year is a strong recruiting number, the liability is bounded and knowable, and the 180-day window matches a B2B sales cycle rather than a consumer one.

You'd change: The tiers above the entry level switch to bespoke terms negotiated with the affiliate team, which is fine for large partners and opaque for everyone else. A published second tier would help mid-sized affiliates decide whether growth is worth pursuing.

Copy this: The tier ladder is based on lifetime conversions rather than a rolling window, so a partner's status never goes backwards for having a slow quarter. That single decision removes the main reason affiliates disengage from tiered programs.

You'd change: PayPal only. It is the simplest rail to run and it excludes partners in the markets where PayPal is awkward or unavailable, which for a product with a global creator audience is a real constraint.

Copy this: The tier thresholds are published as plain numbers, 50 sales for the middle tier, 100 for the top, so a partner can see exactly what the next rate costs them to reach. A ladder nobody can see is not a ladder.

You'd change: The tier is assessed on sales in a rolling twelve months, which means a partner can be demoted for a quiet period. Compare beehiiv's lifetime-conversion basis, which never moves backwards.

Copy this: Tying the payout to the end of their own 30-day refund window is the honest version of a holding period: the partner is paid once the sale is genuinely final, and the reason is stated rather than buried.

You'd change: A $200 minimum threshold is the highest in this table by a wide margin, twenty times Shopify's and HubSpot's $10. Small partners will never reach it, which quietly converts the long tail into unpaid marketing.

Copy this: A percentage with an absolute cash cap is a sensible structure for a subscription with several price points: partners get a number they can repeat out loud, and the business knows the maximum it will ever pay for one customer.

You'd change: A 30-day window on a considered purchase like a course subscription is short, and combined with a one-time commission it makes the program hard to justify for a partner producing evergreen content that converts months later.

The reusable parts

Five patterns the strong ones share

Each with the Referly mechanic that implements it, so copying is configuration rather than engineering.

1

A cap instead of a lower rate

In Referly, a commission has a rate plus a cap in payments or months, and optional step-down periods after it, so 25% for twelve payments then 12% is one plan, not a manual process.

Seen in:HubSpot logoHubSpotbeehiiv logobeehiivGetResponse logoGetResponseKit logoKit

2

A code as well as a link

Automatic per-affiliate coupon generation mints a personal code in Stripe, Shopify or WooCommerce when a partner is approved, so the code exists before they ask for it.

Seen in:Shopify logoShopify

3

Groups with different terms

Affiliate groups each carry their own commission plan, milestones and signup link, plus per-affiliate overrides for the handful of partners who negotiate.

Seen in:beehiiv logobeehiivGetResponse logoGetResponseSemrush logoSemrushKit logoKit

4

A visible ladder

Affiliate milestones move a partner onto a better commission plan automatically when they cross a threshold, and the partner sees their progress toward it in the portal.

Seen in:GetResponse logoGetResponsebeehiiv logobeehiiv

5

Terms that survive a refund

Refunds are detected automatically and the matching commission is reversed, and a holding period keeps a commission unpayable until the refund window has closed.

Groups, milestones and per-affiliate rates start on the Business plan.

A capped rate against a flat one

On a $49/month subscription, over the customer's first two years.

In year one the capped offer pays a partner $59 more. That is the year they decide whether to keep promoting you.

Over two years

25% for 12, then 12%
$218
15% forever
$176

The capped rate stays ahead across the whole two years at these settings.

Illustrative arithmetic on the numbers you set. Not a benchmark, and not a claim about any program in the table above.

The other direction

Three ways to design a program badly

Described generically, never attributed. The pattern is the useful part.

The seven-day attribution window

Short windows look prudent internally and read as bad faith externally. An affiliate producing evergreen content, a review, a comparison, a tutorial that ranks, converts readers weeks after publishing, and a seven-day window discards almost all of it. It is also the single term most likely to be screenshotted and compared between partners.

The physical-goods program with no coupon codes

A store running link-only tracking loses every sale that arrives through a code spoken aloud in a video or typed at checkout from a caption. The partner sees the sale happen and no commission appear, concludes the tracking is broken, and stops. From their side, the tracking is broken.

The rate that was cut after launch

A launch rate set to win attention becomes a rate that has to be cut once volume arrives. The cut costs far more than the difference: partners who joined for the original number leave, and the ones who stay stop treating your terms as stable. If a high number is needed for recruiting, cap it by payments rather than promise it forever.

  • The shapes differ more than the numbers: software and subscriptions mostly pay a percentage, often recurring and often capped; stores mostly pay a lower percentage once, with a discount code attached; courses often pay a flat amount because the price is fixed. We do not publish an industry average here, this page describes shapes, not distributions.

  • Copy the structure, not the rate. A large company's percentage reflects its margin, its volume and its bargaining position, none of which you have. Its decisions about caps, groups, cookie windows and coupon codes usually transfer cleanly.

  • Long enough that a partner believes they will be credited. 60 days is Referly's default and a reasonable starting point; anything under a fortnight reads as bad faith to an experienced affiliate, and it is the kind of term people compare in public. The window is configurable on every plan.

  • Eventually. Your top ten partners are not the same business as the long tail, and putting them on the same terms either overpays one or underpays the other. Referly does this with affiliate groups, each with their own commission plan, milestones and signup link, plus per-affiliate overrides. Groups and per-affiliate rates start on the Business plan.

  • Publish them. Affiliates compare programs before applying, and the ones you want are exactly the ones who read the terms first. A public rate also removes a negotiation you do not want to have forty times.

  • You can, and you should expect to. What matters is direction and notice: raising a rate is free, cutting one costs you the partners who joined for it. If you are unsure whether the rate is sustainable, launch with a cap rather than a number you will have to walk back.

  • This page is written for merchants designing a program rather than for affiliates looking for one. If you are looking to join programs and earn commissions, start with the affiliate side of Referly instead.
