MLM vs affiliate marketing
One pays for recruiting. The other pays for sales.
Multi-level marketing pays participants for recruiting other participants, often many levels deep, and usually requires them to buy in first. Affiliate marketing pays only for sales an affiliate refers, and costs nothing to join. Some affiliate software supports two levels of override commission, which is not the same structure.
- Affiliate programs are free to join
- Overrides stop at two levels
- The reward always rides on a sale
What multi-level marketing is
A structure where income comes from the people below you. The depth is the defining feature, and the legal risk.
Joining costs money
A starter kit, an inventory order, a recurring membership.
Earnings come from a downline
You earn on recruits, on their recruits, and onward, many levels deep.
Regulators look at one ratio
When recruiting pays more than selling, the structure stops needing customers.
What affiliate marketing is
A commission on sales you caused. No buy-in, no inventory, no quota. Refer nothing, lose nothing.
Free to join
Apply, get a tracked link or coupon, earn on what it sells.
Paid per referred sale
A percentage or flat amount, triggered by the sale itself.
Overrides stop at two levels
In Referly, the seller earns the plan rate. Their upline and the upline above earn an override. There is no third level to switch on.
In Referly
Level 1, Level 2, and that is the whole ladder
The seller earns the plan rate. Their upline earns an override, and so does the upline above. Nobody deeper earns anything, because there is nothing deeper to enable.
See sub-affiliate commissionsThe differences that matter legally and practically
Three tests separate them. If you want partners with audiences, not recruiters, cap the depth and keep overrides small next to the direct commission.
- Cost to join
- Affiliate: nothing
- What earns
- Affiliate: referred sales
- How deep it goes
- Affiliate: two override levels, max
